
Ford Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Evolution
The Ford Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS), also commercially known as SecuriLock®, is an engine immobilization security technology introduced by Ford Motor Company in 1996. The system uses an RFID transponder chip embedded in the head of the key that performs a silent electronic "handshake" with the vehicle's computer upon ignition. If the unique security code matches one of the authorized codes stored in the vehicle, the engine is allowed to run; otherwise, fuel and spark are disabled, leaving the vehicle completely immobilized.
